A Few Good Reads....

I was not a "reader" at all...and then I had twins. When the twins were about 18 months old, I started taking them outside in our FENCED IN back yard (which was basically like a giant play pen) and they would play for hours. One day I plopped myself down on a lawn chair and started reading a random book I had laying around, as there was a limit to how long I was willing to sit and play in a sandbox. I loved it! My friends and I used to pass books around our neighborhood and I loved the variety of what I was reading.

Then I had a drastic lifestyle change. Graduate school and four kids under the age of eight. Suddenly, my pleasure reading changed to text book reading, and when I was done with my reading for school, I had no brain power left to read anything else.

Add working and becoming a single mom in my last year of grad school and my time, it seemed, was no longer my own....EVER. My reading was literally confined to text books, professional journals, and notes home from school.

Fortunately, in the last couple of years I have been able to start reading for leisure a little bit. It is a luxury, and something that I mainly do when I am traveling (which is not often) or when I am waiting for something or some one (carpool pick up line....boys' orthodontist appointments). I know that one day I will have plenty of time to read again, and I am sure I will be missing these crazy and chaotic days that leave me almost no time for myself.

Here are a few books that I have read and love...I am putting a link below them to see the write up about them rather than me describe each book.

A memoir about the sudden death of the author's husband while her daughter was gravely ill.

A memoir about man who was wrongly accused of rape and the story of his journey to freedom and his forgiveness of his accuser. AMAZING story.

The story of a woman's journey through grief after the sudden death of her young daughter.

How to live in the present...I still have yet to master this concept.

Awesome book....makes GREAT graduation present.

I have to mention that although this book became VERY controversial, I got an important message out of this book that personally that helped me through one of the toughest times in my life. In addition, I went to high school with James Frey, so I knew when I was reading it that it was not all truth, but that didn't bother me.

Well... I just reviewed my list and realized that these are all non-fiction books. I do read a lot of non-fiction, primarily memoirs and inspirational books. I do read non-fiction and "chick-lit" as I call it, and I love true crime books as well. I suppose I can post those another day. I also keep a running list of what I want to read some day when I have the time...I would love to get some book suggestions from my readers!

I loved both of James Frey's books. Thanks for the other suggestions.
