Give A Shout Out To Your Alma Mater....

It has come to be that bittersweet time of the year,
when my younger daughter is seriously looking at colleges.
Katherine is a junior this year and we are currently planning our college visits for the spring.

Katherine as a baby....my how time flies.

It was the same way with Caroline...
as excited as I was for her to begin a new chapter in her life,
I was pretty devastated when I left her in Kansas a year and a half ago.
Like the rip your heart out "ugly cry" kind of devastated.
Fortunately I was in the parking lot alone before I heaved my first sob,
 so she didn't see me...lol!

Caroline's dorm room...done in Lilly Pulitzer of course...she is her mother's daughter.

While it continues to be difficult having her so far away,
I do still have a daughter a home to cook with, shop with, and just do "girly" things with
like getting pedicures and picking out outfits.
In a little over one short year, I will be left with just my boys.
Today is not the day to say I am looking forward to that...
they are literally driving me NUTS as twin 13 year old boys apparently do.
I digress....

Here are the schools that Katherine is seriously looking at...
I would love to hear a shout out for your own alma mater,
as she is still keeping her options open and considering other schools...
and if you or one of your children has attended any of her top choice schools,
definitely give a shout out and let us know what you think!

So those are Katherine's top choices for the moment....
She is looking for a school in the South with an excellent child development or education major,
and would like a fairly large school that has sororities and fraternities.

So....any grads of these fabulous schools out there?
Anywhere else she should consider?

I had a feeling that University of Richmond wouldn't be on her list since it's local and definitely since you said she wants a large school. Sounds like she has some good choices!! If she changes her mind on size, I could recommend a few smaller/midsize schools. :-)

I know the feeling. Katie, my youngest, who is 12 hours away...just called to say she is going to stay for a May-mester (meaning she will now graduate an ENTIRE year early and then head to grad school). How did that happen??!!!!

All of the school's on Katherine's list are great schools, all schools we know alum and current students who have/are attending. So, should she narrow it down and have questions give us a shout out. We will be sure to hook her up with someone to help guide and answer questions. UK and SC are actually on our youngest's list for "potential" grad schools if she were to come back closer to home. However, I think she is shooting to stay a Texas girl a bit longer! LOL

Being I'm a northerner ( I vote U of M) I can't help you out with southern schools. It looks like she has picked some good choices. I'm sure she is very excited but know it's a hard time for you. When my sister went away my mom set the table for her I think at least 6 months. She was so used to it it was a hard habit to break. And when I left it was hard for both of us. My mom and I have always been super close and then I felt guilty because I was the last of 5 kids to leave. I knew it was going to be hard on my mom. It took a lot of adjustment on both our parts. Luckily I have a few years before we have to go through this with our little guy. Good luck.

Husband graduated from Clemson and son is there now. Hoping that daughter will be starting there in the fall of 2015! Wonderful school and great greek life!

As I'm an instructor at UK - of course, I need to encourage her to come to the Big Blue Nation. We do have a great Panhellenic Society. As an undergraduate, I heavily considered Clemson and it was my second choice. I have close friends who attended Auburn and loved it. Campus visits truly help get the feel of the school. Have fun on those visits.

While they are all great schools, maybe she would think about Providence College. PC has a stellar education program. And while it goes not have Greek Life it does have clubs that are just like them. Hubby and I meet at PC and where both in the Friar's Club. "Small & Chic In C'ville" was also a member!

I went to Sweet Briar and while it is not a large school there are many incredible opportunities that a smaller school affords. It is all girls, but we frequented UVA and Hampden-Sydney fraternities (I married an H-SC guy). The education department is wonderful. I was dead set on going to a big school with sororities and fraternities, but the moment I visited Sweet Briar I knew it was the right place. There are tap clubs which our Sweet Briar's own take on sororities. In many ways being a student at Sweet Briar is its own little sorority. It might be worth a look. I hope you both enjoy the college search!

UGA Baby! Go Dawgs! At least go look at Athens...it is a beautiful place to live and a terrific school (forget that they make the top ten party schools list every year but that might be a plus for her (?) :)

I'm a current Early Childhood major at Clemson University and would love to talk with her or if y'all come down for a tour, I'd love to show her around! We have a wonderful Greek life as well! Added bonus, my name is Christine and I'm from Richmond too! I was a year older than your daughter, Caroline, at school so you can get my number or information from her! Good luck in this fun and exciting time!!

#1 so glad you found me today, because I've now found you! I love finding bloggers my age. ;)
#2 how smart is your daughter!?!? Great school choices. My hubby is a USC grad. I went to Columbia College so I have to say I'm a tad partial to her coming to my neck of the woods! But really, she can't go wrong with ANY of those places. I dread that day and I know it'll be here before I know it!
So nice to have met you in blog land!

Alabama is very impressive. The girls are gorgeous and the sorority houses are incredible! We had a great experience there as parents of a student!!

I currently am a student at the University of Kentucky and absolutely love it! We have all the benefits of an SEC school, including tailgating and a great greek life. Lexington is a beautiful city with so much to offer. I definitely suggest planning a visit. Go cats!

My daughter is at USC in Columbia and she LOVES it! She started as a freshman at High Point University and transferred in January to USC. While the transfer process was not for sissies, it was worth every hurdle. We were concerned that she would transfer not knowing many people but everyone has been so nice & welcoming. She can hardly wait for fall football games. Go Cocks!

UK has an AOII chapter, however you will have quite the rivalry in your home during March Madness should she decide to go there.
I vote for 2 at KU, but I am biased as I am a KU alum. There is just no greater place on earth. Good luck to all of you in your search.
