So it's been awhile.....

You know when you are not planning something and then it just happens....
Out of the blue I suggested to my husband in April that we consider moving.
We had put a fair amount of money into Hotel Chads,
(what we affectionately called our home)
but it needed a lot more money...new bathrooms, roof, back yard patio, need I go on.....
so I thought we should find a home that already had "newer" bathrooms, a little more space,
and did not need a lot of work put into it.
We talked about this decision on a Friday,
randomly looked at a house on Saturday that the girls saw online,
and bought it on Tuesday.
WOW
Was not ready for that, but sometimes these things just happen.
The house was PERFECT for our family.
We had the BEST realtor, Skye Bruce, with Skye Bruce Properties,
and she sold our home in less than a week once we listed it.
Cannot say enough good things about Skye....she kept my sanity through this entire process.
Here we are the last night we were the owners of Hotel Chadsworth.
We will cherish the memories but are looking forward to....
Living life on The Ledge....our new home.
We literally moved just two miles away...so no school changes or carpool changes!
Amid chaos, we moved in three weeks ago.
It was actually kind of comical....
Katherine came home from Tech, Caroline graduated from VCU with her Bachelors, we had a graduation party in the old house for 40 people, Grace came home from Boarding School, Jack played in a three day volleyball tournament, Laura took the SAT,
and we closed on Ledge (our new street) all within about a week.
A pic from graduation day....just to brag a little,
she graduated with honors and Caroline was one of 22 people out of 800 applicants who was
accepted into Virginia Commonwealth University's Advanced Standing Masters Program.
She will complete her Masters of Social Work within one year.

We are fairly settled
(if you call not being able to find most things)
into our new home and are loving the space...
We have six of our eight children home full time this summer,
and I am beyond excited to have everyone home!
We are blessed.

Hello Friends.....

Well it's been about a year since I last posted.

That, in itself, should give you a clue as to what my year has been like.
It's been a year of growing, learning, changing, and accepting.
Filled with joys as well as some not so great happenings.

I really miss my blog friends,
and I really miss blogging.
I'm hopeful that I will be able to get back to posting regularly soon.

Sooooo....here is a BRIEF recap of my year to catch you up...
(warning....long post with bad iPhone quality photos)

September

Back to school!
As you may remember, D's two daughters came to live with us full time in August.
I went from three teenagers at home to five teenagers at home.
Enough said.

October
Kitchen Renovation!
I'm not sure how we lived through a total kitchen remodel
and having all of our hardwood floors redone at the same time,
but we managed....barely.
I will post about my kitchen remodel at a later date....LOVE it!

November
A Leave of Absence.
Well I didn't learn the first time when I was told "you can't do this by yourself"
when my twins were born.
My dear husband told me "you can't do this by yourself"
when his girls moved in and I became a "week-day single-mom of five teenagers working full time."
(You may recall my husband works in Washington DC and is only home on the weekends)
Well, I was SURE I could manage.
NOT
I crashed and burned.
And took a six week leave of absence from my job.
I got to spend a lot of quality time with our kids.
It was a time of self-reflection.
And some really good things came out of it.

December
(Imgine a beautiful family photo from Christmas here)

Celebrating the Holidays!
The holiday season was much more relaxed than usual since I was not working.
I was able to really enjoy the season,
and didn't feel like I was spending every minute rushing around to prepare for Christmas.

One snag.....
I had emergency gall bladder surgery on December 23rd.
I was in the ER for what I thought was the worst indigestion of my life,
and the doctor came in and told me I was going to have to have my gall bladder out.
I rolled my eyes and asked him if he could refer me to someone,
because I had no idea who to call for that and I would do it in January.
He said, "Ahhhhh you are having it out NOW."

I came home from the hospital on Christmas Eve,
and while my memories of the holiday are somewhat foggy due to my pain pills,
I did manage to make it to the Christmas Eve candlelight service at church
to hear my precious son, Teddy, do a reading at the service.
Sadly, I have NO pictures from Christmas though!

January
New Year, New Life.
D and I celebrated our five year anniversary....

Love him.

I extended my leave by two weeks due to my unexpected surgery.
It was during these two weeks that I did some serious soul searching.

And with the blessing of my husband,
I decided it was time to leave my full time job as a Social Worker with hospice.
My goal was to find something in my field that was part time and fun.
Here is what I randomly came upon as my  fun "dream job"
No joke.
This job in the jail sounded fascinating to me.
I applied.
And waited.

February

February was full of sporting events, snow, and searching for a job.
I was desperately hoping to get called for an interview for the "jail job."

On February 27th, I was sitting in a pizza joint somewhere in Maryland
on the way to a vollyeball tournament in Pennsylvania with Jack, my BFF Kim, and her son,
and I had just spilled a LARGE coke in Kim's lap (we are still friends)
and I got the call.
I had an interview for the jail job!
And the boys won a bid to the Boys Junior National Volleyball Tournament that weekend!

March
Bought lots of changes and new beginnings...
Katherine found out she was accepted at Virginia Tech.

Grace found out she was accepted at Phillips Exeter Academy!
She's going to boarding school in New Hampshire!

I had my job interview.
It went well.....but I felt unqualified and had no experience in forensic social work.
I thought it was a good sign, though, when they called to ask for my references.

I also tucked in my annual trip to Florida with the kids to see my Virginia parents.

April
Well the starts were aligned and the good Lord was looking upon me,
and I got the job!
I would be working as a clinician in our county jail two days a week.

And we took a cruise to the Bahamas for spring break......

The photographers got so upset when the kids would not pose "seriously"
but I love the silly pictures because it's a true reflection of their personalities!
(the extra child is Katherine's BFF)
That was our first family cruise,
and to say it was a week of pure laughter would be an understatement.

And after a lot of hard work, the triplets were confirmed at church....
Lots to celebrate this month!

May
Orienting.
Well...to work in a jail, you need to go through some SERIOUS security training.
So it took a month of orientation and education before I even set foot in the jail.
Most of my training was with police officers who were in uniform,
and I got a few strange looks showing up in my Lilly Pulitzer attire.
My husband told me I should tell them I was with the "fashion police" department...lol.

June
Graduation.....WOW.

Katherine with her BF, Nick, whom we all ADORE.

And then the triplets "graduated" from middle school...
Can't believe they are all in high school now!
I know it's cliche but they grow up so fast!

And Volleyball.
Jack's travel team won a bid to Nationals,
so off to Columbus, Ohio we were for the tournament.
They came into the tournament ranked 21st in the nation,
and came home ranked 17th.
It was amazing.

July
Respite.
I made my annual summer trip to Michigan for some much needed R & R.

It happened to coincide with my Michigan dad's 70th birthday.
 Family Picture!

(see Two Twisted Trees)

August
Back to School.
I dropped Katherine off at Virgina Tech August 20th.
Nick happens to be going to Virginia Tech as well....
There were a lot of tears once I got home.
LOTS.
But I am so happy for her and most importantly, SHE is happy.

Caroline turned the BIG twenty-one in July,
and is starting her senior year at Virginia Commonwealth University.

There you have it in a nut shell.

As I said, this past year has been full of joy as well as bumps in the road.
Blending families always come with unique challenges,
and we are no exception.
It's how we deal with those challenges that makes our family strong.
Laura and Grace moving into our home full time was not as easy as it sounds,
and they did a great job of adapting to a home environment
that was completely opposite of what they were used to.
Sure there were issues...
like Caroline had to give up her bedroom,
and all of her clothes have been piled in Jack's room for a year now.
Working on that now.
But things are always a work in progress here.
And WORK it is.
But show me any family, blended or not, that does not have to work to stay strong.
We survive with humor, love, and respect for each other.
Blessings to you all...
I've missed you all and look forward to getting back to my blogging!

Welcome Home...

I mentioned in my last post that I have been MIA
due to circumstances that I would explain later.
Well....
D and I are THRILLED to share with you
that his daughters, Laura and Grace,
have decided to make their home in Virginia with us!
I could not be happier to have two additional daughters at home full time...
My beautiful step-daughters, Laura and Grace

They made their decision around the first of August,
and it has been a mad dash to get them registered for school,
start their school sports, enroll in fall dance classes, go back to school shopping,
and get their bedroom set up in one short month....
and we went to Hawaii for a week in the middle of all of craziness!

The transition could not have gone more smoothly,
and they both have made friends very quickly and are loving their new schools.

I now have five teenagers at home...
Katherine is a Senior and Laura is a Sophomore in high school,
and our triplets are all in 8th grade this year.
Teddy is playing football, Jack playing volley ball, Grace is running cross country,
Katherine is a varsity cheerleader, and Laura attends a dance academy.
We go through eleven gallons of milk a week and six loaves of bread.
I won't even share how many loads of laundry I have with all of the fall sports.
But everyone helps out and we work together to make it manageable.
MANY thanks to my BFF Kim who keeps me sane and is my carpool buddy!

I won't lie....I'm exhausted.
As in DROP DEAD TIRED by the time I can fall into bed.
D is still working full time in Washington DC all week,
and only down in Richmond on weekends so I am a single working mom during the week.
But I am happy, very very happy,
and I have VERY happy children at home.

I truly look at it as both a privilege and a gift
to have Laura and Grace with us full time.

I am honored to have the opportunity to be a role model for them,
and to nurture their precious souls and help them continue to grow
into the beautiful young women that they already are.
It is truly a blessing.
And I can honestly say that their full time presence in Virginia
has created nothing but positive energy in our home.
My children are equally as thrilled to have their two sisters here full time.
It's all good.

So.....here is a little of what we have been up to...
Teddy and Jack first day of 8th grade
Laura and Katherine....Katherine's Senior year....yikes!!!
The crew (missing Laura).....
I love having Caroline closer to home at Virginia Commonwealth University!
First Varsity football game....American theme...Laura (front row middle) with her new friends!
Katherine with her BFF
My one true love....life is so good.
Jack made the high school JV volleyball team as an 8th grader....
And so did several of his best buddies!

Realistically my blog posts will be sporadic at best until the end of October,
when the fall sports wrap up.
As if I don't have enough going on this fall,
we are gutting our kitchen and having our hardwood floors refinished this fall.
The plan is to have everything done by Thanksgiving!

If y'all are curious what I am up to in-between my blog posts,
you can follow me on instagram, which is easier for me to post to right now.

Blessings to y'all......

Family Vacation in Review

Hello again....
what was it I said about posting more regularly?
I have an excuse, but will share my excuse in another post a little later.

Meanwhile...this is what I have been up to...
our first family vacation....to Hawaii!!!
Here we are heading for the airport...
preparing for our 10 1/2 hour flight to Honolulu...
yes, we happened to travel on the same day the hurricane hit

we made it....rough landing...but it was all good!
Aloha!
our first stop on day one was the beach...
started out as a cloudy day....leftover from the hurricane
that did not deter Collin from sand castle building...
the kids found a coconut on the beach, which we kept as a "pet" for the duration of our trip....
by the time we got to Bellows Beach, the sun was out...

and the water was so warm!
stopped at the scenic overlook on the way back to Waikiki Beach

visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial on day two...
the Arizona Memorial was amazing...
day three brought a hike to the top of Diamond Head...

 almost there....

woohoo....I made it...
one hot and sweaty group...
it was much easier on the way down...
chillaxing with our shaved ice after the hike...

we spent our afternoons by the pool...
as well as playing at the beach...
 family dinner at Duke's...
 my one true love...
Caroline, Grace, and Katherine...

world's largest Hawaiian shirt....of course the kids had to get inside it...
most of the kids.....
 day four hiking Manoa Falls....
 the hike was beautiful....
one more hot and sweaty crew....
drove over to the blow hole after our hike...
 at the lookout...
all the kids snorkeling at Hanauma Bay....

a highlight of the trip was attending a luau on the night before we left...
everyone enjoyed their fruity drinks with umbrellas...Teddy sporting his Aloha casual look...
my beautiful step-daughters Laura and Grace...
 Katherine and Jack...
my one true love....he made this entire trip possible for our family
Katherine and Laura...
yes...that is Katherine on stage dancing...lol

Grace and Caroline....precious...

Our trip could not have been more perfect!
We are truly blessed to have a such a beautifully blended family,
where we laugh and love and truly have fun together!

here we are heading home....life is so good!
We are blessed...
